The Irlen Syndrome is not a visual problem, it is perceptual problem undetected by standard educational, visual or medical tests.

The printed page is perceived with distortions of various types that may include movement or disappearance of words, blurriness or reversals, or problems with bright light and glare, resulting in poor learning, slow reading, fatigue, headaches and self-esteem issues. The well-researched Irlen technology has been used since mid-1980 by hundreds of thousands adults and children around the world.

Information about Scoptic Syndrome

 

Many children we see for reading problems have no difficulty with reading words but find reading difficult because they skip lines, lose their place or have poor comprehension. 

These kids often have scotopic sensitivity (also called Irlen Syndrome); are bothered by fluorescent lights, textbooks or glossy white paper, and white boards.  Severity of symptoms vary and include blurring and movement offprint, visual discomfort such as fatigue, strain, headaches, etc.  Kids with this sensitivity can be helped with appropriately colored overlays and lenses.    

We screen and treat for Irlen Syndrome at Education Therapy. We also provide  1-1 tutoring for all subjects and specialize in learning challenges that kids experience.  In addition, we offer test preparation and diagnostic testing.  Our office is in Kahului where we have been providing services on Maui for 20 years.
